Church of Madonna di Piedigrotta - Pizzo - Tropea

DEPARTURE AT 09:00 TOWARDS CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF PIEDIGROTTA, arrival expected at 11:00, duration 1 hour
According to tradition, in the mid-17th century a Neapolitan sailing ship was caught in a violent storm. The sailors prayed to the Madonna, whose image was kept in a painting in the captain’s cabin, promising that they would build a chapel in her honor if they survived. After the shipwreck, the crew was saved and the painting, together with a ship’s bell dated 1632, was found on the beach. The survivors, as a sign of gratitude, carved a small chapel into the rock where they placed the Marian effigy. Visit to Ruffo Castle, lasting about 1 hour. This medieval fortress dominates all of Scilla from its strategic position on a rocky promontory. Over the centuries it has gone from strategic defense to noble residence, eventually becoming a cultural center. Today it also houses a distinctive lighthouse of the Italian Navy. Entrance € 5.00

PIZZO CALABRO around 12:30 p.m. Visit to the Murat Castle of Pizzo, a fortress full of charm and history: a perfect balance between Aragonese military architecture, the memory of a tragic historical period, and breathtaking scenery. Inside, the Murat Museum offers an immersive journey through the final days of Joachim Murat. For those seeking a place rich in emotion and cultural value, this is an unmissable stop.
Afterwards, visit to the CATHEDRAL OF PIZZO, dedicated to Saint George the Martyr and the Virgin Mary. It was built in the second half of the 16th century on the foundations of an earlier church. It is the first and oldest Collegiate Church of the Diocese of Mileto, solemnly consecrated in 1587. Inside, numerous valuable works can be admired: marble statues from the 16th and 17th centuries, including Saint John the Baptist (attributed to Pietro Bernini), the Madonna del Popolo (school of Gagini), Saint Catherine of Alexandria (of Gaginesque lineage), and Saint Francis of Assisi. A wooden crucifix known as “The Father of the Rocca”, originally from Rocca Angitola. Notable paintings, including “The Martyrdom of Saint George” (Emanuele Paparo) and “The Saviour” (Michele Foggia), a gift from Ferdinand I to the city after the capture of Murat.
At 1:00 p.m. there will be a transfer to a characteristic local restaurant to enjoy a fish-based menu.
In the afternoon, visit to TROPEA. From the main square, the tour continues through the three panoramic terraces: Affaccio dei Sospiri, with a spectacular view of Isola Bella; Affaccio del Cannone, perfect for breathtaking sunsets; and Affaccio Largo Duomo overlooking the port. The visit includes the Cathedral of Tropea (Cathedral of Maria Santissima di Romania). Built in the 12th century by the Normans, it is one of the most important religious buildings in the city. In Romanesque style with three naves, it houses the icon of the Madonna di Romania (patron saint of Tropea), the black crucifix from the 1600s, and the relics of Saint Domenica. Next to the Cathedral is the Diocesan Museum, with gold, silver, paintings, frescoes, and archaeological finds. The remaining time will be spent strolling through the alleys and narrow streets that characterize the town.

CHIANALEA BY NIGHT
unique, unmissable experience
An evening of relaxation in Chianalea di Scilla is a magical experience, especially for those seeking authenticity, good food, and postcard-perfect atmospheres. Sunset among the alleys of Chianalea. Arrival is in the late afternoon, when the sun begins to set over the sea: the fishermen’s houses built directly on the rocks reflect the golden light, and the sound of the waves accompanies every step.
Aperitif with a sea view. Stop at one of the small wine bars by the sea: perhaps a glass of Greco di Bianco or a fresh local white wine, accompanied by some nibbles.
The view over the Strait is priceless.
Dinner in a traditional restaurant on request. Dinner is served on a platform suspended over the sea, with a seafood menu accompanied by one of the wines from the selection. Here, fish is the undisputed star:
Swordfish sandwich: Chianalea’s street food. For something more informal, or to end the evening with one last treat, the famous swordfish sandwich is not to be missed. It is a must: grilled fillet, perhaps with a drizzle of olive oil and a few rocket leaves, enclosed in warm, crunchy bread. Perfect to enjoy sitting on a low wall, or on the platforms suspended over the sea, gazing at the water in silence.
After dinner: peace and stars. In the evening, Chianalea is quiet, romantic, and timeless. The lights of the boats are reflected on the water, and only the sound of the sea can be heard. It is the perfect moment for a walk or to sit on one of the wooden piers, letting the sea breeze do the rest.TRIP EXPENSE CONTRIBUTION

Natura e Dintorni:

Boat Trips
Itinerary: Between Caves and Legends
Departing from ports such as Scilla or Bagnara Calabra, the navigation reveals a landscape dominated by high cliffs plunging into the sea and Mediterranean scrub.
- The Hidden Coves: The route reaches bays accessible only by sea, such as the beach of Cala Janculla (considered one of the most beautiful in Italy), where the water is so clear that the seabed can be seen even at several meters’ depth.
- The Sea Caves: The tour includes the Grotta delle Rondini (Swallows’ Cave) or the Grotta del Monaco (Monk’s Cave), evocative inlets where light reflections create spectacular plays of color on the rocky walls.
- Scilla and Chianalea: From the sea, there is a view of Ruffo Castle and the fishing village of Chianalea, the “Venice of the South,” with houses built directly on the rocks.
Choose the Experience: The tour can be customized according to how the sea is to be experienced:
“Pure Nature” Option (Without Aperitif): Ideal for those who want to focus exclusively on exploration and sport.
- Focus: Extended snorkeling sessions, nature photography sessions, and total relaxation under the sun.
- Freedom: Maximum time dedicated to swimming offshore and exploring seabeds rich in biodiversity.
- “Sunset & Taste” Option (With Aperitif)
To turn the excursion into a convivial and romantic moment.
- The Taste: While the boat gently rocks in a sheltered cove, an aperitif based on typical local products is served: crostini with ’nduja or seafood spreads, Calabrian cheeses, olives, and the inevitable chilled white wine (or a fresh Cirò rosé).
- The Atmosphere: The perfect moment is at sunset, when the Aspromonte massif turns violet, giving its name to this unique stretch of coastline.
The magic touch: With a bit of luck, during navigation it is possible to spot the “passerelle,” the traditional boats used for swordfish hunting, a symbol of the age-old traditions of these places.
Excursion cost contribution: varies according to the chosen options
